How to Become a Christian
Lately I've received email and chat requests asking the question "how do I become a Christian?"
These are people who sincerely want to know. They have either tried an organized church or two and have been turned off by the pressure or seduction, or they don't know how to go about finding a place where they are comfortable.
Others who ask this question are seeking answers to life's deepest questions. They have heard about Christianity, or have heard some of the things that Jesus said, and it sounds good, but they are not sure where to start. Some are just confused by all the differing opinions.
I'm the perfect person to ask because I don't have an organization to join. So a person can ask me a question and not have to worry about being pressured into something.
I talk to people on the radio and I speak about forgiveness, compassion, finding your true purpose in life, and about learning to deal with people close to us without resentment. Many seeking people, who have been turned off by falsity or hypocrisy, can relate to what I say and can begin to find Christianity for themselves.
I have always said that Christianity is about a the relationship between a soul and its Maker. But someone or something is always trying to interfere with that relationship.
Many people know that there is evil because they have seen it in operation in other people, or they have seen it within tormenting themselves and trying to lead them astray. The good aspect of this is that if there is evil, and you know for sure that it exists, they there must also be good.
And if there is good, then all you have to do is find it. It is a relief to realize one day that the people who harmed you or failed to help you were victims too. They too had been hurt when they were kids and then they turned around and did to you what was done to them. They never found their way either. They were lost and hurting inside. Now that you are older, you can realize this because now you find yourself in their shoes--resenting others and doing wrong, yet not able to stop yourself.
So from this point on, just be more forgiving. Let go of your grudges and soon you will find that your heart is open to receive love.
Now, as far as finding out more about Christianity. May I recommend that you start by listening to Christian radio. Most cities in the U.S. have more than one station, and around the world there is shortwave. Listening to different programs, especially the ones where they talk about Bible verses or family issues will, with time, give you quite an education about things. It may not clear up the confusion, but it will give you the basic jargon and vocabulary, and some basics about Christianity, like who was Moses, David, Paul. What did Jesus say, and what happened to him in his life.
Now, having the basics, you are ready to start seeing what makes sense and what sits right with your intuition.
Radio is easy to listen to. You don't have to study or get bogged down. You can listen while you work or do other things.
Radio is nice because there is no pressure. If you want to listen to one or two of my programs (I've been on the air for 24 years), you can listen free at www.commonsensecounseling.org/stations.htm
My no pressure, common sense, intuitive approach is very helpful to many people. Because I speak from the heart, thy can hear things said in such a way that they come to life, and get in touch with their own spirituality.
